What is DSL?
DSL (Digital Subscriber Line) is an always-on internet connection that uses your existing telephone line and gives you an internet connection several times faster than a traditional dial-up account. DSL service has a fixed cost and allows you to talk on the telephone and be on the internet at the same time, using the same telephone line.
What are the main benefits of DSL?
The main benefit of DSL service is SPEED. You can surf the internet at rates 10-100 times faster than dial-up internet access. Another major benefit is the constant connection. DSL is an always-on service, allowing you to be connected to the internet 24 hours a day. There are no busy signals and you don't have to wait to connect. You can also talk on your telephone and surf the internet at the same time using the same telephone line. For businesses and some residential services, more than one computer can be connected to the internet using only one DSL line, allowing you to share the faster connection with more than one computer.
How does DSL work?
DSL utilizes higher frequencies of the bandwidth on copper phone lines than what is used for your normal telephone service. By utilizing this higher frequency, DSL can achieve much higher data rates than would be possible with your telephone service, allowing you to have a faster internet connection.
With the DSL technology, operators have installed in the central offices of the MOT (Ministry of telecommunications) very high-end and expensive equipment that allow you to connect to WISE and use the high bandwidth on the copper wire of your telephone line.

Will I need an additional telephone line to have the Wise DSL Service?
No. Wise DSL operates over your existing telephone line without interfering with voice or fax transmission. You can talk on the telephone or send and receive faxes while connected to the Internet.
In case you already have a separate internet line from MOT, you can request your WISE DSL service to be activated on it. In this case your setup fee will be significantly reduced.

Can I use an existing telephone line?
DSL service can/will be installed on your existing telephone line. You can talk and be on-line at the same time on the same line. When you order DSL service, WISE will determine if you can get DSL service on one of your telephone line(s). In some few cases, some technical changes may need to be made to your existing line by the MOT in order to allow your line to be used for a DSL connection.
Should I go to Ogero to apply to my DSL connection?
Not at all. You only need to contact WISE and we will perform a feasibility study and if it is positive we will handle all the paper work for you in order to get you the service the soonest.
Should I wait a long time before getting My DSL connection?
Since this is a new service in Lebanon, and we are partly depending on MOT to process requests and connect your telephone line to our systems, 3 to 4 weeks should be expected before you can get the service once the application is ready.
WISE will treat all its applications with high priority and will do the necessary follow-ups to provide the fastest possible DSL installation
Should I get DSL service (who needs DSL)?
Any home or business that spends time on-line may want to consider getting DSL service. Sending email and surfing the net can be done 10-100 times faster with a DSL connection than with a dial-up account. As technology advances, and life on-line increases, constant access becomes a necessity for both the home and business. Once someone connects to the internet using a DSL connection, dial-up speeds become unacceptable.
Will my computer be okay for DSL service?
Your computer will be suitable to use with DSL service. You may need a USB port or a network card. They both are present in most of the relatively new PCs
What do I need to get DSL? (equipment, installation, etc.)
As mentioned above, some DSL installations require you to use a network card or a USB port, and you will have to use Wise DSL modem that connects the DSL line from your telephone jack to your computer. Once you have your WISE DSL modem plugged to both your PC and telephone line, it is just a matter of having WISE get your account connection activated.
What is the DSL modem?
DSL modem stands between your computer(s) and your connection to the internet. CPE connects to the DSL line at one end and to your computer or network at the other. Ethernet is the most popular form of cable that connects your modem to your computer. The network card allows you to plug the Ethernet cable (similar to a telephone line only thicker) from your DSL modem to your computer. Depending upon your type of DSL connection, there are two types of DSL modems (bridge and a router). DSL modems (bridges) are the standard modems for residential DSL connections and some small business connections. Routers are the modems used by businesses to connect a DSL line to a network. DSL routers are more expensive, but they can provide data-filtering capabilities, security solutions, and several other features that may be vital for a business network.
Can I connect more than one computer to DSL service?
It is possible to connect more than one computer to DSL service through 1 DSL line. How you connect more than 1 computer to your DSL line depends on what operating system you use on your computer(s), and on what type of IP addresses your DSL package includes. NAT (network address translation) allows you to use 1 IP address (either dynamic or static) and share the DSL service with other computers by using one machine as the gateway, and assigning private network IP addresses to the other machines. You can also order more than 1 IP address from your DSL provider.
How fast of a DSL connection do I need?
To determine how fast of a DSL connection you need, you really need to decide how much you want to pay for DSL service. The more speed you get, the more you will pay each month. The more speed you get, the faster everything will be, but, as a consumer, you need to decide what is sufficient. Any speed of DSL will be a major increase over what you are used to with dial-up internet access, so be smart, and shop smart.
If there are many users on my central at the MOT, will this affect my internet connection and make it slower?
No. With Wise DSL each user essentially has his or her own private circuit to the central telephone office. This means bandwidth and service speeds do not vary based on the number of subscribers in a particular area.
How does DSL service connect to my computer?
DSL service connects to your computer from a normal telephone jack, to your DSL CPE, and into your computer network card. In most cases, Ethernet cable is used to connect your DSL CPE to the phone jack, and then to your computer.
Do I get charged more for being on-line all day?
DSL service is a constant, always-on service, so you can be connected to the internet all day, every day. But be careful since DSL plans will have some limitation on your monthly usage to limit service abuse.
Should I turn off my DSL connection?
No, you can leave your DSL connection on all the time. But you should keep an eye on your unwanted traffic. If you are concerned about privacy, turning your computer off may reduce the threat of hackers.
What types of web sites are better to visit with DSL?
Any web site is better to visit with DSL service, because you can download the graphics and pages at a fraction of the time that it would take with dial-up internet access. But, the sites that require a lot of bandwidth (music downloads, video, ftp, etc.) will be the sites that you will notice the true advantages of DSL. You can download files in a speed that you could never even attempt with dial-up
